Set in Victorian England, the story centers around a team of extraordinary figures enlisted by a mysterious caller to stop a villain intent on turning the nations of the world against one another. The coterie of heroes are led by Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery) and comprise some of the greatest figures from adventure literature: Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Dracula vampiress Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), invisible man Rodney Skinner, (Tony Curran), American secret service agent Sawyer (Shane West), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng).
Connery has signed up to star as Allan Quartermain in this dramatisation of comic book artist Alan Moore's (Watchmen) Victorian style creation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. His character is the leader of a literature dream team including among others Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll, Jules Verne's Captain Nemo, H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man and Bram Stokers' Mina Harker from Dracula as well as Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray.
The heroes are called upon by Queen Victoria to fight an evil madman who plans to divide and conquer by involving the countries of the world in a novelty he calls a 'world war'. The role that Sir Sean has been asked to play is based upon the lead character in the 1886 novel King Solomon's Mines by Sir Henry Rider Haggard. Connery is joined by Irish actor Stuart Townsend who plays Dorian Gray, as well as the virtually unknown actress Peta Wilson as Mina Harker. Richard Roxburgh, unforgettable as the duke in Moulin Rouge, seems an inspired piece of casting as 'M'.
Moore's graphic novels are set in Victorian London, in the year 1898. As the original comic books are very British by nature, it is possible that 20th Century Fox felt that they had to include an American character, completely in line with Hollywood's constant fear of alienating US audiences. For this purpose, an adult version of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer is introduced into the story, where he appears as an all-American police detective, played by Shane West.
The graphic novel is highly imaginative and intelligent, and what little action content there is is in no way central to the story. This simple fact makes you wonder why a rough action director like Stephen Norrington (Blade) is approached to do this.
So, after all these words of warning let me just say that I'm actually looking forward to this, it is a very promising film venture and it could prove to be a marvelous part for Sir Sean. Rumour has it that he has signed up for possible sequels as well, so he seems comfortable enough with the project. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has a reported budget of $80 million and is lensed in Prague, Morocco and Iceland.
IMPERDÍVEL!!!
